AFC Wimbledon’s League Two clash against Accrington Stanley postponed

AFC Wimbledon’s League Two clash against Accrington Stanley has been postponed after it was not possible to secure an alternative host stadium following the extensive flooding at Plough Lane.

The game was scheduled to take place at Plough Lane on Saturday, September 28, but damage to the pitch and stadium after the River Wandle broke its banks on Sunday night has meant Wimbledon are unable to host fixtures at this minute in time.

Wimbledon had to reschedule their EFL Cup third round clash with Newcastle United on Tuesday, with the fixture now taking place at St James’ Park on October 1.

More than 100,000 litres of water has been pumped out of AFC Wimbledon’s flooded Plough Lane home.

Wimbledon’s statement read: “Despite significant efforts at AFC Wimbledon in the last 48 hours, it has not been possible to secure a viable alternative ground for Saturday.

“With huge regret, the EFL have therefore postponed the match versus Accrington Stanley.

“Tickets will remain valid for the rearranged date, with more details to follow in due course.”

A club spokesperson told the South London Press: “We spoke to a number of local clubs, but due to the significant logistical issues involved, it wasn’t possible within such a short timeframe.”
