Aleksandar Mitrovic’s Premier League doubters are a dwindling club as Serbian delivers again against Brighton

If there are still any doubters about Aleksandar Mitrovic’s Premier League pedigree then the numbers are dwindling rapidly after another inspired display in Fulham’s 2-1 win over Brighton on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old Serbian scored his fifth goal of the season as Marco Silva’s side moved on to eight points – a total it took them until December to reach in their last top-flight campaign.

Mitrovic only netted three times when the Whites lost their Premier League status under Scott Parker.

But the powerful frontman has been revitalised under Marco Silva. He smashed 43 goals in 44 Championship games last season and has carried that blistering form on against England’s elite.

If Mitrovic can maintain that form it opens up the real possibility that Fulham will need to fend off interest in the January window from clubs higher up the food chain.

His record for the Whites is hugely impressive, 101 goals in 182 appearances.

“We gave everything [on Tuesday,” said Mitrovic. “We didn’t play like we wanted in the first half. The second half, especially the first 15 minutes, we came out and tried to press a little bit higher and scored two goals.

“We died for each and we deserved three points. Sometimes you have to dig in. It’s not a nice part of the game but you have to stay compact. We worked so hard for each other and covered each other.”

Silva celebrated his 100th Premier League match as a boss by inflicting a first reverse of the season on the Seagulls.

“I’m really proud of my players – they are a really tough team, everything they have done since the start of the season shows their quality,” said the Portuguese.

“Probably with different decisions on the counter attack we could even score in the first 20 minutes.

“The first goal lifts us. It gave us the confidence we needed at that moment.”
