Alex Gilbey reveals that connection with partners Elliot Lee and George Dobson extends beyond the Charlton midfield

BY LOUIS MENDEZ

Charlton trio Alex Gilbey, Elliot Lee and George Dobson aren’t just the driving force in the Addicks midfield – they also form a first-rate team on the journey into work every morning.

Gilbey has revealed that the threesome form a car school into training at Sparrows Lane but he admitted there isn’t much tactics chat on the drive to work.

“Mainly we just batter Dobbo the whole way in,” joked Gilbey.

“But it has been really good. Thanks to them, they’re helping me perform really well – so long may it continue.

George Dobson has excelled since Johnnie Jackson recalled him to the side. Kyle Andrews

“We’re a really close group of lads. It’s just making it easier for me when I’ve got El and Dobbo next to me [in the midfield]. We’re all running for each other, grafting for each other. Jacko keeps telling us to win the battles in the middle of the park and that’s what we’re doing.”

Dobson, who joined the club from Sunderland in the summer, found himself out of favour under previous boss Nigel Adkins but has excelled since being brought back into the side by caretaker manager Johnnie Jackson.

Gilbey found himself in a similar situation under Lee Bowyer last term.

“Dobbo, since Jacko has come in, has been unbelievable,” added Gilbey.

“I know how it felt to be left out because I went through it last season. So I was always there to help him. He’s a real mature lad. He’s been in it before. He knew he was waiting for his chance, so he stayed fit, he stayed strong.”
