Alex Neil: People need to put to bed the Millwall club-record fee talk surrounding Camiel Neghli

Alex Neil has urged mentions of Camiel Neghli being Millwall’s club record signing to be dialled down – pointing out that the structures of deals mean that chunks of a fee are based on potential add-ons that might never trigger.

The Lions announced the winger as their biggest ever spend when the 23-year-old signed from Sparta Rotterdam at the end of the recent transfer window.

Neghli was bright when he came on in the closing stages of Saturday’s 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion and went close to scoring.

Millwall head coach Neil said: “See the whole club record fee thing? You just need to put that to bed. Because it is one pence more than the other guy we spent on? And what you find with deals is that they are not as straightforward as you think they are because you have got add-ons and this and that…if he scores an overhead kick in a World Cup final.

“So I wouldn’t read too much into all that.

“What I would say is that we did spend significant funds on Camiel. Camiel is a really technically gifted player. I think the physicality of the Championship is going to take him a little bit of time to get up to the speed of.

“But what you could see today was those flashes and moments when he lands on the ball. Technically he is super-equipped and tactically he is very good as well because he has come from Dutch football, a lot of players from those type of countries are tactically very, very good.

“Camiel is a really good player for this football club – I’ve no doubts about that. It will just maybe take a little bit of time to bed in.”
