Alfie May happy to take on penalty-taking role at Charlton Athletic

Alfie May is ready to take on penalty-taking responsibilities at Charlton Athletic.

The 30-year-old signed for the Addicks this summer from Cheltenham Town.

May has scored more than 20 goals in both of his last two League One seasons for the Robins.

Jayden Stockley and Miles Leaburn both converted from the spot in the 2022-23 campaign. Leaburn will miss the start of the new season due to the ankle injury suffered at Welling United in Charlton’s opening pre-season friendly while Stockley was sold to Fleetwood Town in January.

May took penalties and free-kicks around the edge of the box while at Cheltenham. Asked whether he wants to be on both with Charlton, May told the South London Press:  “That’s down to the skipper and the gaffer.

“If the gaffer says that I’m on them, I’ll be happy to take it.

“It’s strange because we’ve just had lunch (on Tuesday) and Scotty Fraser was saying then, we were talking about penalties, what is your mentality like and if you were a manager what would you have? He said if he was a manager he’d have his strikers on them.

“It’s a good question. I’d be more than happy. But whoever is on them, if they stick the ball in the back of the net then it is all that matters.”

See Friday’s paper for an exclusive interview with May.
