Anthony Hayes denies Ben Garner lost the Charlton Athletic dressing room

Anthony Hayes has disagreed with Charlton Athletic owner Thomas Sandgaard’s claim that Ben Garner “lost the dressing room” prior to his dismissal as manager.

US-based Dane Sandgaard sacked Garner at the start of the month.

Sandgaard told a Charlton Fans’ Forum on Thursday night that the former Crystal Palace first-team coach no longer carried authority over the playing personnel.

Hayes had stepped in as caretaker charge following Garner’s departure. He was promoted on to the first-team coaching staff at the start of the campaign.

“No, I wouldn’t say that he lost the changing room,” said Hayes after the 2-1 loss to Bristol Rovers yesterday. “Being a manager is difficult-  to keep a group of 25-26 players happy because you can only play 11.

“You’re always going to have players who are unhappy. It’s a case of working with them and doing additional training with them so when the opportunity comes they are ready to go and impact in the team, help it to win.

“I wouldn’t have said he lost the changing room. The only thing I’ve tweaked this week is we’ve made the sessions a little bit more competitive and consequential to ellicit a bit of a emotional response – because that’s what the game is. We’ve tried to do that in training – decisions go against you, scores are important and winning is important.”
