Anthony Wordsworth has message for AFC Wimbledon – and reveals why he knew they had chance of beating League One drop
Anthony Wordsworth has warned his AFC Wimbledon team-mates not to ease up after their escape from the League One bottom four was given a huge boost at the weekend.
Joe Pigott’s goal at Southend United earned a third straight victory on the bounce for the Dons.
Wimbledon have taken 13 points from their last six fixtures – one more than league leaders Luton Town.
Only Sunderland (14) have banked more over that period.
Wimbledon’s only reverse in that period was a narrow 2-1 loss to Charlton Athletic.
Wordsworth is in no doubt about the key to their revival. He said: “Team spirit is everything.
“Everyone is together. We’re fighting and we knew, even before the three wins, we were still in with a chance.
“Everyone was writing us off and that gives you something to aim for – to prove people wrong.”
Wimbledon are home to Gillingham on Saturday before going to Scunthorpe United – still not safe themselves.
“We haven’t done anything at the moment,” said Wordsworth. “We’ve just given ourselves an opportunity to get out of it.
“With the games we’ve got coming up, we really fancy ourselves.
“I’ve just said to the lads that we’ve got to keep going. The mood is good and confidence is high. It gives us an opportunity.”
