Ash Maynard-Brewer could be set for Charlton Athletic return against Manchester United

Charlton Athletic boss Dean Holden is hoping goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer will train today ahead of tomorrow’s EFL Cup quarter-final tie away at Manchester United.

The Australian shotstopper, who had started every game under the former Bristol City manager, suffered a concussion in training and missed the 2-1 win at home to Lincoln City on Saturday.

Maynard-Brewer, 23, saved a penalty in the penalty shootout win over Brighton in the previous round of the competition, diving low to his right-hand side. Sam Lavelle converted the winning penalty to book Charlton’s place in the last eight for the first time since 2006.

“We’re hoping that he’s going to be back in full training today,” said Holden.

“All being well, he will be involved tomorrow night. He’s been fantastic since I came in, so it was a disappointment on the weekend.”

Craig MacGillivray, 29, started the win at The Valley. Our paper reported that the keeper could have been set for an early move in this January transfer window.

“Craig came in, and he did fine,” added Holden. “Hopefully, Ash is fine after training today.

“I spoke to him [Craig] on Thursday morning. I possibly had to reframe him a little bit psychologically.

“There had been rumours about a move and he hasn’t been in the team, so it was an honest conversation I had with him.

“I had no doubts on the back of our conversation on Thursday morning that he would be absolutely fine.”
