Athletics round-up: Success for our clubs at Surrey Indoor Track & Field Championships
HERNE HILL HARRIERS
Herne Hill Harriers had a clean sweep of the podium places in the U13 girls 60m final at the Surrey Indoor Track & Field Championships at Carshalton’s David Weir Centres.
Nylah-Skye (8.51), Cymphonique Barrett (8.55) and Rohanna McLeod (8.66) produced excellent runs to collect all the medals, writes Geoff Jerwood.
The long jump events were a rich source of medal success. In the U17 women’s contest, gold was claimed by Pyale Wifa (5.36m).
Harriers’ U20 men scored a one-two through Sheriff Silly and Maalik Adamson, who had best jumps of 6.59m on the day.
The latter took the gold medal home as his second best effort was further than his club-mate achieved. A further silver medal was picked up by U17 David Omosuyi (5.63m).
Ignatius Abebrese was a clear winner of the senior men’s triple jump (14.34m), while Alex Abebrese’s 12.34m to win the U20 men’s shot put gold made it a golden family double.
A silver medal was won in the U20 men’s 60m by Rikaion Smith with a time of 6.94 and a bronze collected in the U15 girls shot Maliyah Boothe with a PB of 9.29m – Nahla Berry was fourth with a PB of 9.12m in the same event.
At the high-quality PUL5K road races in Battersea Park at the end of last week, Lucy Jones moved up yet another level, placing second in the elite women’s race with a 24-seconds PB of 15:48. This was only five days after she had finished fourth at the National Cross Country Championships and this time around she was able to leave the winner of that race in her wake.
Jones made a strong bid to win the race in the fourth kilometre and thanks to this effort her finishing time equalled the previous course record set by double British Olympian Revee Walcott Nolan, who will race in the 1,500m at the upcoming European Indoor Championships. The other Herne Hill female representative on the night was Charlotte Davies (18:28).
The men were also in top form with six running sub-15 minutes times for 5km. Sam Bramwell was ninth in the elite men’s race, equalling his PB of 14:04. Morgan Roberts also ran a PB with 14:41, followed by Brandon Dewar timed at 14:44 and Lewis Laylee 14:47. In the first wave of races Andrew Clarke ran a 16-seconds PB of 14:55 which took him under 15 minutes for the first time. Tom Austin (14:57) and Ronan Tanguy (15:26) rounded off a very good evening for the men in red and black.

Christina Beharry (U15 girls) also jumped further than she ever has before to take bronze in a mark of 3.85m.
U20 women Charlotte Gurney and Visne Bariman earned a silver and bronze, five cm separating their marks at 4.37m and 4.32m respectively.

There were further county titles through Ariane Freemantle in the U15 girls triple jump, where she cleared 10.23m.
Fremantle’s 10.72m from the English Indoor Championships in February is the second furthest jump for her age group in the UK this year.
Ryan Facey took the 60m senior men’s title with a PB of 6.85, almost a tenth of a second clear of his nearest opposition.
In the senior women’s event Monaé Saffron Winston-Westfield was 0.004 seconds faster than her Croydon Harriers opposition to take the bronze (7.82).
Maia Heward-Mills in the U17 women’s 60m brought home the silver in 7.71 before regrouping to dominate the 60m hurdles in 8.84.
Hercules’ U11 girls won their age group in the Epsom Downs Cross Country League, with Chloe Mason and Rachel Wiseman also second and third in the overall individual standings.
The junior distance squad took over Battersea parkrun on Saturday, with some impressive performances. U20 Alexander McGuigan was first over the line in 15:21. Theo Creed was fourth in 15:39, the second quickest U15 parkrun time in the country this year. Fellow U15 Isabella Harrison was first female, with Freia Harper-Tee not a million miles behind in third and 17:54.
Personal bests were recorded by Noah Fernandez (fifth in 15:55) and Pancho Panchev (sixth in 16:00).
CROYDON HARRIERS
Two Harriers’ high jumpers struck gold at the Surrey Indoor Championships at Sutton.
U20 Caterham School student Tunrore Adenili advanced his best with a 1.85m clearance before three unsuccessful attempts at 1.88m. This places him 17th in the current UK rankings.
Daniella Josephs, 12, deprived of her high jump speciality at which she has cleared 1.41m, successfully turned to the long jump, which she won with a leap of 4.07m, which puts her 25th in the UK rankings.
