Ben Garner praises impact of two-goal Jack Payne as Charlton dump non-league Coalville Town out of the FA Cup

Charlton boss Ben Garner praised the impact of Jack Payne after the midfielder bagged a brace and an assist in the 4-1 FA Cup win over Coalville Town.

The former Swindon man broke the deadlock with a near-post header midway through the first half, before sending in a corner for Jayden Stockley to double the lead just before the interval.

Southern League Premier Division South side Coalville halved the deficit through top-scorer Ashley Chambers shortly after the restart but the Addicks secured their passage into round two as Payne and substitute Chuks Aneke added two more late on.

Garner said: “Jack and young Tyreece [Campbell] were excellent today. Payne showed his quality. His numbers are really good considering his playing time overall. TC was really bright. He showed his quality one-v-one and his pace. Great ball in for the first goal. His next level now is regularly goals and assists. He’s got the potential to do that.

“We want that competition. Payne has done great. We’ve got a lot of players here who’ve not had full pre-seasons. Payne is one, McGrandles is another. Payne has done well, he’s had starts. He’ll get plenty of playing time this season. We want that competition and that challenge in the team.

“In the first half we were excellent. These are difficult ties. You’ve got everything to lose and they have nothing to lose. We were really good first-half, right from the first whistle. Really professional in what we were doing. Created numerous opportunities and went in deservedly two up. Probably could have one or two more.

“We made it a little difficult in the second half by giving them a goal, a lift and getting energy. We would have gone further ahead earlier if we hadn’t done that. But we got going again for the third and fourth goals. Overall, a good performance and safely through to the next round.”

The visitors rallied after the break following Chambers’ strike – which came after a slip in defence by Sam Lavelle.

“It’s a huge lesson for us that goals give teams momentum and energy,” said Garner. “There was no danger at the stage of the game and we were really comfortable. By them getting that goal, their crowd go up.

“They’ve got an extra zip in their legs and can press a bit more. For 10 minutes they stepped on and made it difficult for us. We then started moving the ball better again and made opportunities to make it a healthier scoreline, which we did at the end.”
