Ben Thompson set for Millwall exit

Ben Thompson looks set to leave Millwall before tonight’s transfer deadline.

The 26-year-old midfielder is only contracted to the Lions until this summer.

And the South London Press understands that Thompson contract could be cancelled by mutual consent.

He has played just 46 minutes of Championship football this season

One potential switch that could appeal to Thompson is hooking back up with his former Millwall manager Neil Harris, who was confirmed as Gillingham’s new manager earlier today, provided he can seal his exit from the Den outfit today.

Thompson has played 175 times for the Lions and scored 12 goals.

But he has dropped down the pecking order in SE16 and Millwall were prepared to listen to offers last summer.

Portsmouth have regularly been linked with Thompson after he had a storming loan spell on the South Coast. But since then there has been a change of management with Danny Cowley succeeding Kenny Jackett.

Rowett – talking to the South London Press in November – said: “He has been a really, really good player for this club and wants to play in the U23s if he is not in the first-team. His attitude is fantastic.

“He has been really good in those games and has helped a little bit with his leadership around the younger lads. I can’t say enough good things about him.

“Until January he will continue to be available for selection for the first team. If January comes around and he hasn’t played or featured much then I’m sure he’ll be no different – he will want to play football.

“I’d be more worried if a player was sat there and didn’t want to play or get in the first-team. Those wouldn’t be the right attributes.

“Thommo has shown all the right things and should be commended for that.”
