Bermondsey bricklayer laying foundations for professional switch into boxing
David Finucane will make a defence of his English super-middleweight title on March 3 – with plans in place for making the switch into the professional boxing ranks.
The former Fisher amateur, 28, will put his UK Boxing Union belt on the line against Ayman Sakhi at the O2 Forum, Kentish Town.
And the bout will also double as a final eliminator for a crack at the British title.
Bermondsey’s Finucane is a bricklayer by day and has to pack his training around a physical job.
“I started boxing when I was about 17 or 18 but I didn’t take it competitively until about three years ago,” he said.
“I was a bit of a late bloomer, but I got there in the end.
“I’ve been in and out of boxing gyms my whole life.
“As I’ve got older, it has made me realise I haven’t got a lot of time left to achieve things.
More than one person has told me I’ve got a bit of talent in the bank.”
Finucane knocked out Marcus Stephenson in the fourth round in October to win the English strap.
“I’ve had six fights in the UKBU and won five of them,” he said. “I also won my fight in the Golden Gloves Boxing League.
“Hopefully this next one will lead to the British title and then I want to turn professional.
“It is a great standard. A couple of people have boxed for the UKBU and then gone professional, I’ve had the chance to spar with them.”
