‘Bittersweet’ – AFC Wimbledon boss hopes Jack Currie makes Premier League stage after Oxford transfer
AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson hopes Jack Currie can reach the Premier League after he was sold to Championship side Oxford United.
Jackson handed Currie, 22, his senior EFL debut and saw the left-back become one of the most consistent performers in League Two across the two last two seasons.
League One play-off winners Oxford secured Currie’s services on a long-term deal as they look to consolidate their place in the second tier.
“As is always the case with these lads that you bring through, it’s bittersweet,” Jackson told the South London Press.
“Jack was a really good player for us and left a bit of a hole in the squad, with Lee Brown retiring as well.
“I was sad to see him go but I was really pleased for the lad.
“He was excellent for me and I was excellent for him – we helped each other.
“It’s probably the natural progression in his career now.
“I said to Jack: ‘Nothing would make me happier than seeing you play the Premier League one day.’
“As a coach, when you know that you have played a small part in someone’s journey. I gave him his league debut and put that trust in him to play two full seasons, then it’s rewarding when you see them go on to bigger and better things.
“I wish him nothing but the best.
“He was a great servant to the club and I hope he goes on to play at the top.”
