Blackheath looking to ease shaky start to campaign with win at Leeds Tykes

It’s been a difficult season to date for Blackheath – just two wins from eight starts represents possibly the worst start to a campaign since they took residency in National League One 17 years ago.

Most of those years have seen Club competing in the top half of the table, even on occasion vying for promotion, but this term sees them languishing in 11th place.

Tomorrow, following a weekend off, they travel north to face Leeds Tykes, once of the Premiership, but now 15th and bottom of the table with a solitary win to their name.

“A week off has hopefully given us a chance to recharge our batteries,” said Blackheath head coach James Shanahan.

“It’s been a disappointing and, in many ways, a frustrating start because in all six of the games we’ve picked up a losing bonus point so we’ve been very competitive throughout.’

“We’re looking forward to getting back on the field, and getting on a roll in the lead up to Christmas.”

For those not travelling to Yorkshire, there’s still an opportunity to watch some live rugby as a Club 15 will take on Rams at Well Hall.

“We haven’t had a second team for a few years,” said Shanahan.  “Having a bigger squad makes training a lot more competitive and meaningful.

“The Club 15 have had some good results, and with the first team not winning too many games, there’s strong competition for places which makes for some tough calls. But it’s a good headache to have.”

Leeds Tykes v Blackheath is a 2.30pm kick-off at The Sycamores while the Club’s fixture against Rams is at 2pm. Entry at Well Hall is free of charge.
