Boss Warburton believes QPR victory over Blackpool could be the spark for play-off run

Mark Warburton reckons that QPR’s late victory against Blackpool is the sort of game that can “galvanise” your season.

The R’s went ahead in the first half when Jimmy Dunne nodded in. Dion Sanderson was sent off just before half-time leaving the Hoops with 10 men.

Josh Bowler equalised for Pool in the second half, before Luke Amos’s 88th minute winner gave a depleted QPR all three points.

Warburton said: “We just wanted to pose a problem and create an overload in midfield. There’s obviously areas we want to work on in terms of Stefan Johansen, Ilias Chair and Jeff Hendrick, our ball players, but we felt we could hurt them where we can drop into pockets.

Luke Amos, right, turns home the winner

“We went too long too early, as a result we didn’t win the first ball and we were too deep to win the second, but I thought once we worked that out and we had the players to drop in, Stef did well and when we played forward with that extra pass, we looked like we were going to hurt them.

“We got the goal and then should have got another one late in the half, a great delivery which Yoann Barbet was so unlucky not to get on the end of.

“That changes the game, without a doubt. I haven’t seen the incident back yet. I thought Dion was playing outstandingly well up to that point. His pace and physicality was clear for all to see, but his sending off obviously posed us a problem.

“The boys stood up to a man, they worked tirelessly, they maintained shape, and they did outstandingly well to deal with the Blackpool goal and still find a winner.

“You saw my reaction [to the goal] – I unashamedly ran on the pitch to punch the air! There are moments in a season that can really galvanise everyone at a football club.

“It felt like there was a heavy air around the place. It was fantastic for the fans, fantastic for the players and now we move on very swiftly to another very tough test against Blackburn.”
