Boulter falls to defeat 6-1, 6-1 in Wimbledon third round

Katie Boulter’s Wimbledon dream is over after she was demolished on No.2 Court 6-1, 6-1 in under an hour by Harmony Tan.

Boulter never really got going. She hit an astonishing 21 unforced errors in a match during which Frenchwoman Tan, who beat Serena Williams in the previous round, hardy had to break sweat.

Maybe the second game of the match was sign of things to come. Boulter broke a string and was the victim of a lucky net cord as Tan raced into a 2-0 lead.

Boulter was struggling with her first serve – and her ball toss – and was broken again at 1-5. Tan o the other hand was holding her service games relatively easily – and served up two aces to win the first set.

Boulter was broken again right at the start of the second set and was really struggling to contain Tan.

She did find her serve at last in the third game of the set to trail 1-2. That put a spring in her step and got the Court 2 crowd going.

But almost as quickly as that spring came it disappeared. Tan held for 3-1 then broke again and, at 4-1 with a double break the writing was on the wall – Tan even won one point in the fifth game after retreating to hit a Boulter lob through her legs and back into play.

An excellent cross court backhand set up match point for Tan and Boulter’s morning was summed up when she served a double fault on match point.
