Break in Championship fixtures could help midfielder make Charlton Athletic return

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Sam Field could be fit to play some part for Charlton Athletic – if the coronavirus pandemic doesn’t end up seeing the 2019-20 Championship campaign being scrapped.

The on-loan West Brom midfielder has been out since October 23 when he suffered knee damage at Bristol City.

Field has had at least one setback on his comeback but the fact that English football has been suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak could mean that he has a shot at featuring in the Addicks’ run in.

“I spoke to Sam the other day and he didn’t go down the operation route,” said Charlton manager Lee Bowyer. “He went down the injection route. He said his knee feels a lot, lot stronger now. The test will be when he gets outside with tackling and kicking a ball. But he feels a lot better than when he first came back.

“He is definitely someone who might be able to start playing again – if we do get going.

“Pagey [Lewis Page] is back running and feels good but he’ll need a few games to get going again. It doesn’t look like we’ll have games to get going again – it will be a nine-game season. He’ll probably miss most of it.”
