Broncos boss confirms all players will feature against London Skolars
Mike Eccles has confirmed all his players will feature during Friday’s Capital Challenge against London Skolars as the Broncos prepare to take to the field for the first time in 2023.
A number of Academy players will also be included in the Broncos’ matchday squad as The HAC in central London hosts this season’s curtain raiser.
It will offer Broncos fans their first chance to see new recruits Henry Raiwalui, Ethan Natoli and Marcus Stock in action while Jarred Bassett faces his former teammates after departing Skolars in October.
The game is held 16 days ahead of the Broncos’ Betfred Championship season opener at the Cherry Red Records Stadium on Sunday, February 5, when Batley Bulldogs visit Wimbledon.
Eccles can’t wait to get the Broncos out on the field after more than two months of high intensity pre-season preparation and was delighted to see the Capital Challenge return.
“I’m really happy for the club and Rugby League in London generally that the Capital Challenge is back,” said Eccles.
“I remember when I first joined the Broncos, I couldn’t believe there was a patch of grass so central to the city to play Rugby League on – it’s amazing.
“This is our only official hit-out, we’ll be doing plenty more behind closed doors too. It’s an opportunity for us to apply the combinations we’ve developed on the training ground in a real game situation.
“We’ll place no emphasis on the result and everyone in the squad will get minutes under their belt, including a few Academy players who we’re always keen to expose to our first-team environment.”
Eccles, who was promoted to Director of Rugby and Performance in September, is keen to continue working closely with Skolars through 2023.
He said the partnership both clubs have formed is mutually beneficial and has been significant in the development of multiple players representing both teams this year.
“We’ve built a great relationship with Skolars that is mutually beneficial to both clubs on and off the pitch,” said Eccles. “Jordan Williams is a great example of how talented individuals can benefit when we work together.
“He came through our Academy system and has spent a few seasons with Skolars developing his own game. Now, he’s a mainstay in our first team and we’re pleased to have him onboard.
