Bruton handed captaincy as Charlton gear up for start of FA Women’s Championship
Charlton Athletic get their FA Women’s Championship season underway with an away trip to Lewes on Sunday.
The Addicks have gone full-time for the first time in their history after Thomas Sandgaard acquired the club in July.
Lauren Bruton has been named as the South London club’s skipper with Rachel Newborough named vice-captain.
Bruton signed for the Addicks on a free transfer after being released from Reading in the summer.
Charlton Women finished eighth last season on 19 points, eight points above the relegation zone.
Bruton said: “I’m really proud to be the first captain of a professional side for Charlton.
“It’s something I’ve always dreamed of in my career and I’m hoping that I can lead the team and the girls out and hopefully we do really well this season.
“I was really shocked [to be named as captain], I’m really chuffed and proud to get into this team and lead the team out.”
Manager Karen Hills added: “Lauren is a natural-born leader and brings experience to our squad, which is why I was pleased to name her our club captain for this season.
“Lauren will help us grow on and off the pitch as we are a new group of players and new team. Lauren brings high standards to the group, which is so important in helping us to create a high performance environment.”
Crystal Palace, who finished a point and place ahead of Charlton last season, host Bristol City. Both matches are 2pm kick offs.
