Career-high payday as Dillian Whyte gets his wish to face WBC world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury
Frank Warren claims he will be giving Dillian Whyte a career-high payday after winning the purse bid to stage Tyson Fury’s WBC heavyweight world title defence against the South Londoner.
Queensberry Promotions bid £31million – £7m more than Matchroom Boxing – to win the rights.
Whyte is set to earn £6m.
“It’s a good fight,” Warren told iFL TV. “I fancy Tyson, who I promote and who I’m with. Dillian has been saying he is overlooked – we’ve delivered him his fight, now lets get on with it.
“I certainly thing it is a career high [payday] for Dillian. The fact we won the purse bid, if it had gone Matchroom’s way he would have got £2million less. He has had a good result, good luck to him.”
The WBC are also understood to have ordered that the winner receives an extra 10 per cent payment.
“He [Whyte] has got a lot to fight for, it’s a nice carrot,” said Warren. “We’re working on a couple of venues. It is the biggest purse bid in the history of boxing and what we’ve got to do is make sure we maximise the income.
“I don’t think they [Matchroom] ever felt they could win it.
“It is a very important fight. You have got the number one heavyweight in the world and Dillian Whyte has got the opportunity to kick his way into some sort of unification fight.
“Tyson needs to be active. Boxing gives him a real sense of purpose.
“This is an opportunity for him [Whyte] – he’s been asking for it for three years and Queensberry have given it to him.”
