Catford Wanderers tennis: Mixed team facing drop threat after 4-0 loss to Crescent
Catford Wanderers mixed first team slid further down the league table after losing badly to Crescent, writes Denis Costelloe.
The visitors first pair of Dave Butt and Julie Jenner were in sparkling forming and ran through Sean Harvey and Lilla Brown (6-2 6-1) before a 6-4 6-2 victory over Martin O’Brien and Kathy Aldridge.
Wanderers’ third pair of Andrew Ofori and Sue Rice–Vine offered some resistance, sharing sets against Julian Copeland and Sharon Hayes (6-3 6-7) before battling hard despite losing to Tony Garrett and Mandy McWhinnie.
Catford Ladies’ second team were also 4-0 losers at home to Parklangley.
Toni Boardman and Kate Williams made a dreadful start, losing dismally to Nikki Fame and Janette Corsie. They tightened up in the second round but lost 6-3 7-6 to Alison Basson and Julie Slater.
Wanderers’ second pair of Ruth Owens and Julie Taylor, the latter only having taken up the game of tennis six months ago, will be happy enough despite their losses.
Wanderers’ veteran men’s side of Brian Brass, Julian Langley, John Townsend and Leigh Cole as they won 3-1 at Crescent Sidcup Club. The ladies first team drew 2-2 at Shooters Hill. Their side was Stephanie James, Kathy Aldridge, Lilla Brown and Julia Garling.
