Catford Wanderers tennis round-up: Men slump to Gravesham defeat

Catford Wanderers’ men continued their disappointing season as they lost 5-1 to Gravesham.

The visitors’ first pair of Gareth Fox and Tim Baker were far too good for the home side, disposing of Sean Harvey and Lyndon Douglas 6-1 6- 2 and  cruising past Andrew Ofori and Martin O’Brien 6-1 6-3.

Harvey and Douglas, to their credit, fought hard to get Wanderers’ only win as they beat Gravesham’s Paul Miller and Christian Terry 6-0 3-6 and 10-7 in the deciding tie-break.

Wanderers’ third pair of Rob Dawbarn and Leigh Cole had a good morning’s tennis despite losing both their matches. After  going down 6-3 7-6 to Miller and Terry they got involved in a cracking encounter with Sarb Sandhu and George Youngs.

They took the first set 6-0, lost the second set 7-6 and faded in the championship tie break.

Catford’s ladies team of Kathy Aldridge, Julia Garling, Stephanie James and Lilla Brown found visiting Sundridge Park too hot to handle and were well beaten.

Sundridge are the current Kent Division One champions and put out a very powerful side with players currently playing for Kent. It was probably the best tennis team seen at Catford for some time.

Wanderers mixed second team crashed as well to David Lloyd Dartford. The Catford team was Brian Brass and Kate Williams, Denis Costelloe and Basia Olsinkka and Andy Williams and Julie Taylor.
