Haddad Maia v Rybakina 1-4 (Haddad-Maia retired injured)

Fourth Round

It was all over with 27 minutes as reigning champion Elena Rybakina helped injured Beatriz off Centre Court.

It was a straight  opening game to the Russian, although she was bothered by the sun when serving on the vantage side of the court.

But that did not give an indication of how short the game would be as her Brazil opponent retired hurt after 27 minutes and 1-4 down.

Games went predictably with serve until the first sniff of a break on Haddad Maia’s serve gave Rybakina break point, which she duly took when the Brazilian smacked the ball into the net.

The trainer was then called to court to treat Haddad Maia, who promptly left court for more examination of her injury.

She returned to court, walking slightly gingerly and was aced by quite a slow serve.

The crowd sensed that she was unable to move freely and started showing sympathetic clapping every time she lost point.

She then walked off court simply unable to reach out for the ball.
