Charlie Edwards’ fight column: I can’t wait to be back on boxing’s big stage as I bid to become two-weight world champion

In two weeks, I return to the big stage in boxing. But as the title of the show says, Don’t Call It A Comeback.

Sure, difficulties outside of the ring mean I’ve not been active in the last two years, my career has faced challenges and it’s been incredibly frustrating.

I may have dropped off people’s radar but, trust me, I never went away. I never stopped believing, dreaming, training incredibly hard or was anything other than the world-class fighter that I have always been.

In fact, one thing has changed – I am a better fighter now than I was.

On Friday, April 12 at York Hall, and live to the nation on Channel 5, I officially launch my campaign to become a two-weight world champion.

The support and the reaction to the announcement has been overwhelming, the demand for tickets has been amazing and everything around me now is set up so I can become world champion at bantamweight.

I first became world flyweight champion in 2018, and my career has been a rollercoaster ever since, but finally I have the backing of a new promoter, Wasserman Boxing, I’m fighting on free-to-air television on Channel 5, I am self-managed and there is a plan.

My opponent on April 12 is the former European and IBO world bantamweight title holder, Georges Ory.

Make no mistake, this is no gimme or comfortable warm-up fight, to ease me back into the mix.

Ory, a southpaw, is dangerous, seasoned and has a proven track record. I am going back in at the deep end with a tough opponent, but that is exactly how I wanted it.

The WBC International Silver title will be on the line and I would love to one day soon get my hands back on the full world title.

The night I draped the famous green and gold belt across my shoulder, as the flyweight king of the world, is my proudest in the sport.

But there are many more to come and I hope you guys come along on this journey with me, starting on April 12.

Over the following two weeks, I’ll be keeping readers up to speed with my preparations and offer you exclusive insight into my training camp.
