Charlie Edwards set to end 18-month ring exile and targets bantamweight domination

BY JAMES BOVINGTON

Former WBC world flyweight champion Charlie Edwards ends an 18-month exile from the ring on Friday and the South London-raised boxer has promised to “destroy anyone who gets in the way” as he seeks to dominate the bantamweight division.

The 30-year-old has moved throughout England in pursuit of boxing success.

An amateur GB squad boxer at 14, Edwards entered the professional ranks at 21 and was based in Croydon. But stints followed in Sheffield, Liverpool, Marbella and Sutton. He now trains in Manchester at the Champs Camp Gym under coach Joe Gallagher.

Edwards is set to box on Kieran Farrell’s Vicious Promotions show at Bowlers Exhibition Centre in Manchester.

“I’ve not had a fight for 18 months – for reasons I can’t disclose,” he said. “Now I can’t wait to showcase all the hard preparatory work that’s allowing me to mature as a boxer.

“I’m like a caged animal and when let loose everyone will see just what I’m capable of.

“My next opponent will end the fight in a state that makes it abundantly clear to other boxers just what they will undergo when fighting me. I respect all opponents, as I know boxing demands courage, but I fight to win.”

Edwards admits to being “more ambitious than ever” with  his sights set on being world bantamweight champion and possibly winning in two other divisions to become a four-weight world champion.

He said: “I’ll not rest until this dream becomes reality. I love and live this sport and I’m hungrier than ever for success. I will be the British Manny Pacquiao.”

Away from boxing Edwards loves spending quality time with his wife and young daughter at their home in Portugal.

“I miss them when training in England. It’s hard but I’m blessed to have a supportive partner who believes in me and shares my ambitions.

“I’m also grateful to everyone who has helped me through tough times. My message to boxers experiencing a low patch is to keep optimistic. Remember difficulties help create champions.”

Edwards has won 17 of his 18 bouts and became WBC flyweight champion in 2018 with a unanimous points win over Cristofer Rosales.
