Charlton 0 Peterborough 1 – Jonson Clarke-Harris goal inflicts a first loss on Addicks boss Nigel Adkins

Charlton Athletic’s 10-match unbeaten run was ended by Peterborough United and their prolific striker Jonson Clarke-Harris.

The striker claimed his 31st goal of the season as he finished from the edge of the box in the ninth minute.

Jayden Stockley saw a first-half penalty saved by Josef Bursik, a similar kind of attempt to Ronnie Schwartz’s failed conversion at Oxford United.

And despite Charlton having plenty of possession in the second period they were unable to find a leveller as Nigel Adkins suffered a first loss since taking charge last month.

The result drops Charlton to eighth in the League One standings with Portsmouth and Oxford United both winning to move above them – although the SE7 outfit have played fewer fixtures.

Charlton also lost winger Diallang Jaiyesimi to injury in the first period.

The normally ruthless Sammie Szmodics failed to convert two excellent chances, the first of which Ben Amos diverted out for a corner, before also hitting the left post from close range in stoppage time.

Peterborough’s movement and fast breaks caused problems for Charlton in the opening 20 minutes but after that they were only the most sporadic of threats.

Liam Millar saw plenty of the ball in the second half but failed to translate that into really telling moments. Bursik needed to get down low to his left to hold Alex Gilbey’s shot, following a dynamic diagonal burst, while Jake Forster-Caskey’s strike deflected narrowly wide of the target.

Peterborough could point to having all of the major scoring chances in the match as they took another major step to securing automatic promotion.

Charlton will look to get back on track against Crewe at The Valley on Tuesday. They certainly still have work to do to ensure they go into the knockout stage of the season.
