Charlton 2 Gillingham 3 – Home headache continues for Addicks as Aneke sent off in yet another Valley reverse

Charlton’s home headache continued as they stretched their winless run in SE7 to seven matches.

The Addicks have not come from behind to pick up maximum points since their League One play-off final success over Sunderland.

Twice Lee Bowyer’s side got themselves on level terms but Gills captain Kyle Dempsey slammed in the decider in the 86th minute.

At that point the hosts were down to 10 men after Chuks Aneke was sent off for two bookable offences in quick succession.

Oliver Lee – the son of former Charlton midfielder Robert – put the visitors ahead after just 31 seconds as he punished a poor clearing header by Deji Oshilaja. His dad was at The Valley to see it as he was on punditry duty for the Addicks’ in-house streaming of the fixture.

Aneke hit the woodwork twice before he made it 1-1 and was unfortunate on both occasions prior to lifting the ball over Jack Bonham from Liam Millar’s pass on the quarter-hour mark.

But Connor Ogilvie produced a superb first-time volley into the top right corner of the net to put the Kent outfit ahead again with 37 minutes on the clock.

Jayden Stockley headed home his second goal since his loan switch from Preston in January. Andrew Shinnie whipped in an excellent cross from the right and the big striker guided beyond Bonham in the 52nd minute.

Aneke could have no complaints about his dismissal on 70 minutes.

Charlton kept trying to push for a third goal but Lee hammered an effort against the bar in the 86th minute. Dempsey punished Millar and Ben Purrington both opting not to engage to rifle beyond Amos at his near post.

Diallang Jaiyesimi was denied in the 89th minute, Bonham pushed his goalbound shot over the bar.
