Charlton 2 Plymouth Argyle 2 – Maddison produces stunning goal as Addicks drop more League One points

Marcus Maddison scored a superb first league goal to help earn Charlton Athletic a 2-2 draw against Plymouth Argyle.

The former Peterborough playmaker had only been on the pitch two minutes when he nutmegged his marker and drilled an excellent low finish into the bottom right corner of the net.

A shaky defensive performance in the opening 45 minutes saw Luke Jephcott twice put Argyle ahead.

Chris Gunter had levelled the contest shortly after the half-hour mark.

Ian Maatsen, pushed into a midfield role, struck the bar with a venomous strike just before the half-time whistle.

Maddison’s introduction gave the hosts’ extra quality in the final third and he teed up an excellent chance for Conor Washington, who could not find the target with his effort.

The Addicks struggled to contain the pace and directness of the Plymouth attack. And the hosts had a nightmare start as Ryan Hardie breezed past Ben Watson and his cutback was converted by Jephcott from close range.

Charlton were arguably fortunate that their equaliser stood as Chuks Aneke appeared to climb all over an Argyle player, with Gunter forcing the ball home from close range.

A Plymouth free-kick on 36 minutes was then diverted into the path of an unmarked Jephcott, who again made no mistake.

It was the same scoreline at the break as the recent derby against AFC Wimbledon – but there was to be no four-goal riposte from Lee Bowyer’s side this time.

Maddison produced a moment of brilliance to restore parity.

But Charlton failed to create enough chances in the closing stages, that Washington opportunity the best they could fashion when the score was 2-2.
