Charlton academy chief on landing defender – ‘surprised’ Rangers let him go

Former Rangers defender Harris O’Connor has signed a contract with former club Charlton Athletic.

The 19-year-old centre-back trialled with Burnley, Sheffield United, Stoke and Hibernian earlier in the season.

Left-footed O’Connor, who can also play at full-back, was previously on the Addicks books for five years before moving on to Kilmarnock. He has been capped at junior level by Scotland.

O’Connor made 12 appearances for Brechin City at the end of the 2020-21 season. He was released by Rangers at the start of July.

Charlton academy boss Steve Avory said: “I was surprised, quite honestly, that he was released by Glasgow Rangers.

“He’s only 19 years of age so there’s still some development for sure.”

O’Connor said: “There’s been so many players come from Charlton who’ve had great careers and I can only hope to emulate the same things.”
