Charlton Athletic boss explains why Jake Forster-Caskey came off early in 3-2 loss to Gillingham

Jake Forster-Caskey was forced off in Charlton’s 3-2 loss to Gillingham today with the hamstring injury which had made him a selection doubt at the start of the week.

The midfielder was replaced by January signing Diallang Jaiyesimi in the 26th minute.

Forster-Caskey had trained away from the main group at the beginning of the week but a scan on his hamstring showed no issues.

But he did not last long before being forced off with Andrew Shinnie shifting into a central role and Jaiyesimi, snapped up from Swindon for a six-figure sum, played down the right flank.

Addicks manager Lee Bowyer said: “He [Forster-Caskey] is saying he’s just felt it a bit again. But he trained Thursday, Friday and he went for his scan on Monday and that came back all clear.

“We looked after him Tuesday, Wednesday – he didn’t train. Then he trained Thursday, Friday and was fine. Sometimes if you get those little occurring ones it can just be neural, from the back. You feel little twinges and it pulls you up. Maybe it could be something like that.

“It will be interesting to see what it is.”
