Charlton Athletic boss gives his verdict on 3-0 win over Welling + expresses confidence on transfer front
Nigel Adkins was happy with Charlton Athletic’s performance in tonight’s 3-0 friendly win at Welling United.
The Addicks used 22 players at Park View Road with Craig MacGillivray the only one to play more than 45 minutes. The summer signing from Portsmouth did not have a save to make in a first period that the visitors dominated, Diallang Jaiyesimi and Charles Clayden both scoring.
Midfielder Aaron Henry rifled low in the bottom right corner of the net after the restart.
“It was a good workout,” said Adkins. “I was really pleased with the first half – we had really good possession.
“It was a great finish from DJ. Young Charles Clayden scored a goal. Jayden could’ve scored a couple.
“Aaron Henry scored a good goal and we could’ve scored a few more, the goalkeeper has made a real good save from Conor Washington at the end.”
Charlton are back in action at Dartford on Saturday but it is not yet clear when Alex Gilbey, Ryan Inniss, Adam Matthews and Ben Watson could make their return to the playing fold.
Asked about their absences, Adkins replied: “You’ll see that across the board [with other clubs]. We’re building towards the start of the season and there will be situations we have to deal with.
“We’ve got another game to look forward to at the weekend.”
Charlton have made four signings in the window – MacGillivray, George Dobson, Akin Famewo and Jayden Stockley.
Six senior permanent players have left with the most notable being Ben Amos, Chuks Aneke, Andrew Shinnie and Darren Pratley.
“We will be bringing more players in,” said Adkins. “It’s what pre-season is. Ideally, I’ve said it, I would have loved to have had the team we’re going to be starting with on the first day of pre-season so we can build on that.
“However, the reality is we’re working towards it. Everyone is working hard towards it behind the scenes. What a great opportunity for the young players so far.”
