Charlton Athletic boss Jackson delighted at Mason Burstow and Albie Morgan being on the scoresheet

Johnnie Jackson had praise for Mason Burstow and Albie Morgan as they scored in Charlton’s 2-0 win over Fleetwood Town today.

Teenage striker Burstow put the Addicks ahead in the 53rd minute, finishing from close range after Ryan Inniss headed a deep Morgan free-kick back across the face of goal.

Morgan then sealed the three points in the second minute of stoppage time.

Burstow has five goals in his breakthrough campaign, with two in the last three League One matches.

Jackson said: “Really pleased for him again. It’s always nice when graduates make it into the first team, let alone have the impact that he is having.

“He started off in the Papa John’s, then he played in the FA Cup and now he’s getting opportunities in the league – with every step up he makes he is having an impact. It’s fantastic for him because he is a really humble young man who is very respectful around the group. The lads respect him because of what he brings to the party.

“He deserves his place in the team and he deserves his start. He’s rewarded us with a goal.”

It was Morgan’s first time on the scoresheet since the 2-0 win at Ipswich Town on November 28, 2020.

At one stage it looked as if the midfielder could be allowed out on loan this month to secure regular football.

But Morgan has started the last two games.

Asked about his goal today, Jackson said: “He did deserve it and I’m delighted for Albie because it has been tough so far for him this season. He hasn’t had too many opportunities but he has been given one of late – which he asked for – and he has taken it. Fair play to the lad, he has had to wait. When you’re knocking on the manager’s door you’ve got to be ready when given the opportunity. He has certainly done that in the last couple of games. He has made an impact.

“Lucky he got his goal because otherwise we’d probably have had an argument in the changing room after his miss a minute before!

“I’ve said to him before that with the ability he has got and the things he can do, he should be playing every week – he has got that much talent. The challenges we’ve had with him is sometimes out of possession and the discipline side of the game, which I think he is adding. The other obvious one is he needs to add goals to his game. Someone technically as good as him and the ability to get into the goalscoring positions, he hasn’t scored enough in his career.

‘If he can add that to his game it could take his game to a whole new level because ultimately that is what managers and coaches want. He can do it. He needs to keep working hard and practising, which we’re doing with him all the time. You saw some of the fruits of that today.”

The result ended Charlton’s four-game winless spell in League One, their first maximum points in SE7 since the victory over Cambridge on December 11.

“Really pleased,” said Jackson. “We haven’t been on a great run in the league, not necessarily getting what I felt we deserved out of games. The boys’ efforts deserved that victory.

“We started pretty poorly but credit to Fleetwood, they started very brightly. They caused us a few issues, we had to tweak a few things tactically that helped us to grow into the game a little bit.

“We finished the first half stronger – they certainly started it better. Second half we were front foot and looked the more likely team, we were taking it to the opposition. They kept us honest for periods in the second half but we got what we deserved in the end.

“The players looked a little edgy at the start but they settled down. We changed the way we were pressing in midfield during that first half, which helped. It gave us a bit more balance. The players stepped up and we were front foot in the second half.”
