Charlton Athletic boss Jones on 3-0 win over Exeter City: We dominated from start to finish

Nathan Jones was feeling very satisfied after Charlton Athletic’s 3-0 win over Exeter City today.

Angus MacDonald’s first-half own goal put the Addicks on the way to a one-sided victory – their fifth home one in a row.

Tyreece Campbell struck an excellent second from the edge of the area after the interval with Miles Leaburn’s close-range finish reflecting the dominance of the South Londoners, who are only outside of the League One play-offs on goal difference.

“I’m delighted,” said Jones. “We really dominated from start to finish. We got the goal and I would’ve liked us to be further ahead – you are always edgy.

“It was really, really professional. Once we got the second we really kicked on. That was a proper Charlton performance. When we’re the best version of ourselves we are a good team.

“The squad is in a good place and the crowd is magnificent as well.

“We moved the ball well on a sticky pitch. We could’ve been further ahead. Karoy (Anderson) missed a great chance (at 1-0).”

Campbell, 21, netted his fifth of the season.

Jones could be seen in deep and passionate discussion with the academy product. So what did he say about his goal?

“About time – because he gets in wonderful areas,” said the former Luton, Stoke and Southampton boss.

“In training he does it. He’s devastating in training. He has to recreate that training form in matches. Today I thought he did.

“I don’t think he needs any more confidence. I love him. I play him. We clip stuff up for him as staff – we do want him to the best version of himself. Once that happens we have got some player.”

Anderson started with club captain Greg Docherty absent due to illness.

“He was truly outstanding,” said Jones. “One of his best games. He could’ve scored.

“He gets around the pitch – he’s a threat and he works hard. He outworks people – that’s what he did today. He was excellent, a wonderful performance.”
