Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones ‘proud’ of Addicks display as they battle elements during goalless draw at Lincoln City
Nathan Jones says he was proud of the way his side battled the elements during the goalless draw with Lincoln City.
Storm Darragh has been battering parts of the UK and whilst Lincolnshire didn’t bear the brunt of it, high winds and rain affected the game at Sincil Bank.
Neither side could find a breakthrough during a chaotic encounter that saw little in the way of clearcut chances. Substitute Allan Campbell missed Charlton’s best opportunity from Tyreece Campbell’s low cross, whilst former Addick Reeco Hackett squandered the Imps’ clearest opening.
The Addicks have now won just once in eight League One outings.
Jones said: “It was disgraceful conditions. A football match out there was never going to be a spectacle. The positives that came out were that it was a clean sheet, and we limited them to very little. Counter attacks first-half was all it was. We were far better in possession in terms of how we move the football. We made better choices than we did in midweek (during defeat against Crawley Town) – when to go in, when to play, when to move the ball quickly. If it hadn’t been for the conditions we’d have been able to have been a little more fluent.
“It’s a seventh clean sheet so far, 10 in all competitions. Last year this football club only kept five clean sheets in the whole season. It shows we’ve improved things defensively.
“I’m proud of the performance. I don’t think anyone realised how bad the conditions were until we went into the middle of the pitch. Second-half, it was blowing a gale against us. We were brave, took the sting out of the game and had the best situations.
“The conditions were a disgrace. We tried to play, move the ball quickly. We did that really well first-half. Got into situations but didn’t hit the target, didn’t quite have the final pass.
“Second-half it was gale-force, blowing right down the pitch against us. We had to try to play and take the sting out of the game. We’ve kept and clean sheet and we’ve limited them to very little. It shows that one part of the game was very good today.”
