Charlton Athletic boss Nigel Adkins explains late return to training for Ronnie Schwartz
Ronnie Schwartz is due to fly back into the UK on Friday, with the Charlton Athletic striker allowed a later return date to pre-season training.
The Dane, 31, made just three starts in League One after a January move from FC Midtyjlland.
It had led to speculation that Schwartz, who still has two years to run on his contract, could be moving on.
“Ronnie is due back in the country on Friday,” Charlton manager Nigel Adkins told the South London Press on Wednesday. “He has a personal issue in Denmark. I’m aware of it, but I can’t elaborate on that. He has had a personal situation, as all of us have in our lives. And personal is personal.
“I did make him aware [at the end of] last season that he needed a good pre-season. We’ll see where he is at.”
Charlton start off their pre-season matches with a behind-closed-doors match against Celtic tomorrow.
The Addicks will play two different teams in each half – meaning that a number of the club’s youngsters will get a shot at impressing with a significant chunk of the club’s recruitment still to be completed.
“There is no pressure on them,” said Adkins. “They need to just go out and give everything they have got. It will be a very, very young team.
“It is very early in our pre-season and Celtic are way ahead of schedule, they have got a European game next week – so they are in a far more advanced position than we are.
“We are looking at using 22 players – so you can work the maths out for yourself – it is a fantastic opportunity for our younger players, who have been in our academy, to sample playing against Celtic and being part of the first-team group for pre-season.
“We’ll find out whether they are going to stay in the first-team group or maybe go out on loan.
“All the players are training so well. The medical sports science team – Danny Murphy, Josh Hornby, Adam Coe and Ben Talbot – they have been absolutely brilliant.
“All the staff are working so hard for each other.”
