Charlton Athletic boss not setting points target to reach League One play-offs
Lee Bowyer is not setting a play-off points target for Charlton Athletic.
The Addicks are ninth in the League One table going into tonight’s home game against Burton Albion.
There is little margin for error as Charlton try and chase down the sides above them – especially as most of their rivals have played fewer matches.
Bowyer reckons it is hard to know what total should clinch a top-six finish.
“Lincoln have been most steady but apart from that every team has a little rick in there,” he said. “I don’t think you can predict a points total to get into the play-offs. Teams now are catching up with their games in hand, it is starting to even out a little now.
“Most of the teams above us we have got to play again. It is going to be tough but I said at the start of the season it was going to be tough to get into the play-offs. It is not easy. Teams have been building and we had to restart [building a squad]. You can’t keep doing that and getting away with it.
“We’ll keep going. We picked a point up at the weekend. Obviously we didn’t play very well but there have been others where we have played well and taken nothing from a game.
“We know that we have to go on a run, that is blatantly obvious. We’re capable of doing it, we’ve done it before – we’re capable of doing it again. We’ve got to keep working hard, it’s all we can do.”
Lee Bowyer is right, Charlton need to go on a good run to have any chance of reaching the play offs and it has to start tonight ! In my humble opinion, Charlton need to win a minimum of 12 games to have any realistic chance of the play offs this season. It may be less wins if teams above us start dropping points on the run in, as Charlton have been doing since November. We can only hope, but, as I have said before, it needs a another season and with a decent owner and the EFL cap gone, Lee and his management team will have a great opportunity to build good team.
