Charlton Athletic boss on extra attributes Albie Morgan needs to add to his game

Johnnie Jackson has challenged Albie Morgan to chain together impressive displays for Charlton Athletic as he looks to cement his place in midfield.

The 21-year-old had not featured in 11 successive League One matches before coming on as a substitute against Crewe on January 12.

But Morgan has started the last two matches and scored in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Fleetwood Town.

Those recent displays seem to have shut down plans for the academy product to head out on loan for regular football.

Morgan, who has made 89 appearances for the South London club, knocked on Jackson’s door recently pleading to play. He has made 10 starts in League One this season.

“We’ve had some frank comversations and he asked for the opportunity,” Jackson told the South London Press. “I’ve given it to him and he has taken it in the last two games. Well done to him, I’m really pleased about that. But it is about remaining consistent, don’t give me a reason to leave you out.

“When you have got the shirt it is yours to lose.

“Albie has done well but I don’t want to be talking about two or three games, I want to be talking about 10 or 15 games, half a season or a full season. It is over to Albie now.

“He has got so much talent that someone as good as him should hold down a regular place. With Albie it is about discipline and bringing the other side to your game. People know what you can do with the football in possession. He needs to add consistency and goals to his game and he popped up on Saturday with one. He should’ve had two.

“If he can add goals and consistency then he becomes a really good player at this level, he could even kick on if he adds to his game. He works hard every day, trains hard and has a good attitude.”
