Charlton Athletic boss on Luke Berry’s vital first goal and delight at his team’s display in win over Orient

Nathan Jones was delighted with the performance of his Charlton Athletic side as they beat Leyton Orient 1-0 at The Valley today.

The Addicks have a 100 per cent record in League One and have kept two clean sheets.

Summer signing Luke Berry scored in the first minute of second half stoppage time to earn the South Londoners maximum points.

The only negative for Charlton was an injury to Josh Edwards. The Scot was stretchered off after a horrible late challenge by former Addicks defender Sean Clare.

“We were aggressive from the start and if we had relaxed a bit and demonstrated a little more quality in the final third then we’d have scored more,” said Jones, who raced down the touchline when Berry broke the deadlock.

“The manner of the win was excellent. There wasn’t too much in it, first half, but we were controlling the game and had no real worries with anything

“Second half we were outstanding and stepped it up a level. The aggression, intensity we played at and the amount of opportunities we had, not necessarily clearcut, but we were pressing constantly for that winner. I’m really proud. It was an excellent performance.

“It was a different performance to last week. We had to be defensively sound, Wigan are difficult to play against and kept the ball in awkward areas – it was hard to press. We never felt we would lose the game, it was just could we create moments? Today we dominated the game.

“The margins were always in our favour in the first half.

“It’s what he (Berry) does. I told the club, when people were asking why I was signing him, that whatever league you play Luke Berry in he will pop up and have that quality, timing and ability to find a goal. He did in the Premier League for Luton, he did it in the Championship, for me, and in League Two.

“That’s why we brought him to the football club.”
