Charlton Athletic centre-back Ryan Inniss sidelined by fresh thigh injury

Ryan Inniss will miss Charlton Athletic’s League One match at Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon – after suffering a fresh thigh injury.

The former Crystal Palace centre-back was sidelined for more than three months earlier this season with a thigh problem. It is not clear whether the latest setback is in the same area.

Inniss was also unavailable for 27 League One matches last season with a quad issue.

The 26-year-old has played 29 times for Charlton – the joint highest of his career along with a loan spell at Newport County – since signing from the Eagles in October 2020 and is due to be a free agent at the end of this season.

Inniss had been handed the captain’s armband since his latest return to action but also sat out the midweek reverse to MK with the problem.

Charlton have the option to extend the defender’s contract at the end of this season and he had already indicated earlier this year that he wanted to stay.

“I absolutely love it here,” said Inniss. “The club have looked after me, so it’s all just about getting appearances and setting a benchmark for myself and hopefully earning the extension that the club have got on my contract.”

Inniss recently talked to Charlton’s matchday programme about his chequered injury record.

“I’ve had to really zone in on actually looking after myself. When I’m reintegrating, I’m so pumped up and excited – I want to show what I’m capable of doing.

“With every inury over the years, that’s grown ever so slightly, that I need to prove my worth, when really the sensible thing from the outside looking in would be to control my output.”
