Charlton Athletic draw Manchester United away in the EFL Cup quarter-final

Charlton Athletic will play Manchester United at Old Trafford in the quarter-final of the EFL Cup.

Under caretaker boss Anthony Hayes, with new manager Dean Holden in the stands, Charlton knocked out Premier League side Brighton 4-3 on penalties on Wednesday evening after a goalless draw during the 90 minutes.

Ashley Maynard-Brewer saved Moises Caicedo’s spot-kick in sudden death, which allowed defended Sam Lavelle to convert the winning penalty and book Charlton’s place in the quarter-finals.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United side beat Vincent Kompany’s Burnley 2-0 in the last round.

The Addicks are 18th in League One and are without a win in their last five outings in the third tier.

Charlton, who are 57 places below United in the football pyramid, last reached this stage of the competition in 2006.

The last time these two sides faced each other was in February 2007, with goals from Park Ji-Sung and Darren Fletcher handing United the win.

The tie will take place the week commencing the 9th of January.
