Charlton Athletic go second in Women’s Championship after 3-2 win at Sunderland

Charlton snatched all three points at the death in an incident-packed 3-2 win at Sunderland in the Women’s Championship.

The home side led twice through Emily Scarr and Emma Kelly, but the Addicks levelled with efforts from Ella Rutherford (pictured above) and Kiera Skeels before Elisha N’Dow headed in a 92nd-minute winner.

Both teams cancelled each other out in the opening 15 minutes, with neither able to register a shot on goal.

Captain Kelly fizzed a first-time effort just over the bar on 26 minutes, before Scarr converted an Abby Joice cutback 60 seconds later to hand the hosts the lead.

The goalscorer almost doubled her tally six minutes after the break – rattling the crossbar with a dipping shot from just outside the box.

Charlton were becoming more adventurous going forward and got their reward on 62 minutes when Rutherford headed in from a questionable corner.

However, she was soon off injured soon after a collision with Neve Herron on the halfway line – the North-East side arguably lucky not to be reduced to 10 players.

They made the most of it in the 78th minute when Kelly’s effort found its way in off the post.

But the South Londoners hit back instantly – Skeels’ hopeful strike deflected past Claudia Moan to level things again.

And things got even worse for the Wearsiders when Abby Holmes was shown a second yellow for a cynical foul soon after, before N’Dow made them pay in stoppage time with the winner.

Charlton’s Mia Ross said: “We know their strengths, going into low blocks, that really good scrappy side of the game that we’re trying to work on at the moment. We matched that, especially in the second half, and Elisha at the end, with the header, was a bonus to win the game.

“We kept fighting and came away with the three points. We’re running with a small squad today so we need every single person to play a part. Even the girls on the bench were really positive throughout.”
Charlton face Lewes in the FA WSL Cup next Sunday.

Ross said: “It’s definitely a way of keeping the momentum going, obviously we do prioritise the league but we want to win every single game.

“We know Lewes will be tough – they’re in the same league as us, and we want to keep building on the performance today.”
