Charlton Athletic have pre-season training plans in place – as Nigel Adkins asked about player recruitment process
Charlton Athletic’s pre-season plans are taking shape – with Nigel Adkins revealing they are set to have a training camp away from their Sparrows Lane training base.
The Addicks boss was asked about his player recruitment plans with the transfer window opening in around six weeks time.
Adkins said: “A lot of work is going on behind the scenes, for example, pre-season. If we stay in League One, or we don’t get to the play-offs, we have got a date we come back. If we’re in there that will change a little bit. But we’ve got our testing day sorted out and the first day of pre-season training. We just need to sign off, all being well we’ve got a training camp away. It’s important we have got a structure to build from.
“On the recruitment side we have got Steve Gallen, Jed Roddy…how we want to do recruitment…how we put it all together. We’re working on that and building on that. We need to know where we’re looking for, are we in League One or the Championship? That might affect the pool of players we can attract and be going after.
“It is that little bit in the balance, but likewise it is about establishing what players have we got with us? Some players coming out of contract might have been doing okay – who is going to fit into our plans moving forward? We’re assessing all that on a daily basis.
“The sooner we can start moving forward with signatures, that will be beneficial. But that has got to be right and at the right time. History will suggest a lot of signings, especially in League One, are done in the last couple of days of the transfer window. So that is the end of pre-season. We want to be signing players, but we want to be getting the best out of the players we’ve got at the moment and making sure there is a pathway for the youngsters.”
