Charlton Athletic keeper Ben Amos wins League One Player of the Month award – but Lee Bowyer misses out to Peterborough’s Ferguson in boss version

Ben Amos has won League One’s Player of the Month for October – but Lee Bowyer missed out to Peterborough’s Darren Ferguson for the managerial accolade.

The Charlton duo were both in the running for the awards.

Amos kept six clean sheets last month as the SE7 outfit stayed unbeaten, winning five of their matches to climb into automatic promotion contention.

The former Manchester United and Bolton stopper was up against Siriki Dembele (Peterborough), Gwion Edwards (Ipswich) and Marcus Harness (Portsmouth) for the award.

Bowyer said: “I’m really pleased for Ben because he has just come back into the side this season and it is difficult really to follow in the footsteps of Dillon Phillips, because he did well last year.

“He has stepped up and done everything we knew he was capable of doing. He deserves it. I bet there isn’t another keeper this season who keeps that many clean sheets in a row and it’s not normally a position you see win these type of awards.

“Ben goes unnoticed by some but we notice what he does – he comes for crosses to help us out and his shotstopping is good as well. His all-round performances have been excellent.”

Ferguson took the manager honour as his table-topping Posh side played one match more, scoring 17 goals as they banked 19 points.

“I’m just happy to be nominated as it shows we are doing the right things,” said Bowyer. “We didn’t score many but we kept clean sheets. If we keep doing that I’ll be happy. I don’t worry about those other trophies, it’s the main one you want – isn’t it? That’s more important to me.”
