Charlton Athletic keeper has points total he believes secures a League One play-off place
Ben Amos reckons that Charlton Athletic need 13 points from their final seven matches to guarantee a League One play-off spot.
The in-form Addicks won 2-1 at Sunderland yesterday to boost their prospects of making the top six.
Charlton, unbeaten since Nigel Adkins took charge, are just a point behind fourth-placed Blackpool.
Amos told Valley Pass: “We know we need 75 points, that usually does it to get in the play-offs. We’ve got good momentum now.
“We’ve known all season that with the players we’ve got, if we get it right, we fancy ourselves against anyone. It’s just been piecing that together throughout the team. It hasn’t quite clicked throughout the season.
“But we don’t go into any game fearing anyone. We know if we play to our level we can come to places like this [Sunderland] and get results. That’s our attitude going forward.”
Amos made a number of key first-half saves to keep out Sunderland, unbeaten in 14 matches heading into the weekend.
“It’s what I’m there to do,” he said. “If we can keep the chances down to a minimum, that’s ideal. By and large we have been recently. If I can keep us in it when they do get through, that’s what I’m there to do.
“He [Adkins] set us up in a structure that is a bit more solid, off the ball. He’d have been disappointed we didn’t keep the ball so well but as soon as we go ahead, the longer the game is going on, you do lean more towards seeing it out.
“We managed to do that. It was great character from the boys.
“I’m pleased to make the saves but me and all the defenders are dying for clean sheets. Disappointed not to keep one in the end. A dry bit slowed the ball up and gave them a chance to get back in the game.
“But we’ll take the win – 100 per cent.
“We’ve got that structure in place and everyone knows their roles and what is expected at different stages of the game. There is no confusion. It makes it a lot more straightforward and you don’t give stupid goals away, getting caught in between different styles.”
