Charlton Athletic likely to sign former Fulham and Chelsea centre-back Michael Hector

Charlton Athletic look set to sign former Fulham and Chelsea centre-back Michael Hector on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old has been without a club since he was released by Fulham in July.

Hector was part of the west London club’s squad which won promotion to the Premier League under Scott Parker in 2020.

He has played 177 Championship matches in a nomadic career which has taken him from the Hellenic League right the way up to England’s top tier.

Because Hector is unattached it means he can sign for a club outside of tonight’s 11pm deadline. But the South London Press has been told that the Addicks are keen to wrap up his move today.

It will cast fresh doubt over the future of Sam Lavelle and we already reported earlier today that Terell Thomas had been cleared to make an exit.

Lavelle signed a three-year contract with Charlton in August 2021 but has seen youngster Lucas Ness impress since he was handed a chance earlier in the campaign. Eoghan O’Connell, a summer signing from Rochdale, has also recently returned to the squad after recovering from a knee injury.

Hector had been on trial at Sheffield Wednesday. He had previously been a huge hit for the Owls, winning their Player of the Season award in 2018-19.

His last competitive appearance was the 4-0 defeat at Sheffield United on the final day of last season, when Fulham were already assured of the Championship title.

Hector made four league starts in that campaign, a three-match burst in November.

  • Wow not another free transfer, is there no one at Charlton that can afford to splash some cash on a decent, ready to go player, particularly a striker. We have Sam Lavelle who is a centre half and he has always seemed reliable when I have seen him play, so why another centre half and not striker ? Oh, silly me, I forgot, Charlton still have Aneke to fall back on. What have messrs Gallen and co been doing this month? Even Fleetwood have found some cash to get two half decent forwards in Stockley and Marriot. Watch Stockley do the business now, particularly Saturday week !! I hope by end of business tonight, I have egg on my face, but somehow, I think not.
