Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones explains decision making behind striker substitution at Stockport
Nathan Jones has explained why he chose to introduce Chuks Aneke rather than Matty Godden from the bench during the goalless draw at Stockport County.
Godden dropped out of the starting line up – Miles Leaburn taking his place.
Jones elected to introduce Aneke as a substitute 10 minutes after the restart, with Karoy Anderson also brought on. Luke Berry and Thierry Small made way.
When asked how he chose which forward to bring on, Jones explained: “We’ve just felt, against the wind, we’d love to have been really fluent on a very difficult, tricky pitch with the wind blowing in our faces.
“But we needed a platform, we needed to get up the pitch. If Godden was on, we want Godden’s cleverness.
“But we probably needed the physicality. Karoy as well, a bit more physical than Beza would get us up the pitch.
“A fair result. So, look, could we have done this? Could we have done that? Fine. But as you said, in the context of everything, seven points is a wonderful week.”
Jones also commented on the fitness of defender Lloyd Jones, who required treatment during the second half but was able to continue.
“It’s just stiffness,” he clarified.
“Look, it’s three games. The schedule is demanding. He’s had three games in a week. He’s had big things.
“We’ve gone 98 minutes today. Well, more than that, because obviously the first half as well. So, look, it’s just fatigue. And everyone was going through it.
“Every club at the minute pretty much is in the same boat. What we’ve managed to do is good recovery strategies. We have that and we’ve got to go again.”
