Charlton Athletic owner Sandgaard gives sell-on verdict over keeper’s move to Newcastle United
Thomas Sandgaard has confirmed that Charlton Athletic received a decent sum of money as part of a sell-on in Nick Pope’s switch to Newcastle United.
The Toon signed the former Addicks goalkeeper for an undisclosed fee towards the end of June.
Pope played his first senior football with Charlton but was sold to Burnley, along with winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson in the summer of 2016.
The England international spent six seasons at Turf Moor but the Clarets’ relegation from the Premier League sparked his exit.
Pope and Gudmundsson were both sold during Roland Duchatelet’s time as Charlton owner and their departures coincided with the SE7 outfit dropping into England’s third tier.
Sandgaard acquired the club in September 2020.
Asked about Charlton’s sell-on in the Pope deal, the US-based Dane told the South London Press: “We got a lot of money out of that one, I’m very pleased with that. Clubs like us, who develop a lot of our academy players will naturally in some years have good income from that sort of sell on.
“Especially since the players are not always fully developed when we sell them and it is a limited amount we get – when they fully develop at a Premier League club then you can see how much they can be worth.
“It’s nice the system gives us the opportunity to make something out of it at that stage.”
