Charlton Athletic prospect signs new long-term contract
Nathan Asiimwe has signed a new long-term contract at Charlton Athletic until 2026 – with the option of an additional year.
The 18-year-old has made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Addicks this season.
Asiimwe started the season as first choice – playing the full 90 minutes in the opening six League One matches.
The academy product is vying with Tennai Watson for the starting spot on the right of the backline.
Asiimwe is the third youngster at the club to sign improved terms in recent months with Karoy Anderson and Micah Mbick also putting pen to paper.
Charlton head coach Michael Appleton said: “I’m delighted. When you see some of your homegrown talents develop through the academy and then take that step into the first-team environment it can sometimes be difficult. Nathan has had that opportunity of being involved in the first team and he’s done ever so well.
“For me, it’s just the starting block for Nathan now. He’s got to show that he’s capable of kicking on, progressing and getting even better. He’s got a massive opportunity – we’ll set the environment that a young player needs to progress and develop his career and hopefully he’ll take his opportunity.”
Asiimwe, who joined Charlton at the age of nine, signed his first professional deal in May.
Asked about his goals when he spoke to our paper in October, he said: “To be involved in as many games as I can.
“There are a lot of matches left this season and we have a big squad – hopefully I can keep myself in and around it and try not to drop back down to the U21s.”
