Charlton Athletic set to complete deal to bring popular defender back to SE7

Charlton Athletic are set to sign Adam Matthews on a new deal until next summer.

The 28-year-old right-back played 28 matches for the Addicks last season.

He did not sign for Lee Bowyer’s side until the start of September but once fully fit he was number one choice in his position with Chris Solly dropping out of the first-team picture.

The Charlton manager revealed last week that there could be money in the budget for the SE7 outfit to bring in one more player.

And Matthews can sign outside of the transfer window as he is unattached.

His return will go down well with Addicks fans, who were keen to see him sign an extension.

The Addicks’ transfer embargo prevented a deal happening although Matthews still trained with the team when they hooked back up for pre-season training and he also featured in the friendly at Crystal Palace.

Charlton signed Chris Gunter after Thomas Sandgaard’s takeover of the club in late September but Bowyer has spoken about the former Reading man also being an option on the right of a back three.

Matthews is able to also play the right wing-back role.

He is expected to sign for the Addicks today and will be a quality experienced addition.

Matthews has played 321 senior matches.
