Charlton Athletic sign former midfielder Robert Lee’s son Elliot on season-long loan from Luton Town

Luton Town attacking midfielder Elliott Lee has joined Charlton Athletic on a season-long loan.
The 26-year-old, son of former Addick Rob Lee, put pen to paper on the temporary switch to South London on Thursday afternoon, which means he has signed in time to be eligible for Saturday’s home clash with Crewe Alexandra.
Lee, whose brother Olly plays in League One with Gillingham, bagged six goals in 18 appearances whilst on loan at Oxford United last season. He started his career at West Ham United and had spells on loan at the likes of Colchester, Southend and Blackpool before linking up with Barnsley and then making the move to Kenilworth Road in 2017.
He made 38 starts as the Hatters were promoted from League One in 2018-19 and has scored 24 goals in 93 appearances in total for the Bedfordshire outfit.
Boss Nigel Adkins said: “Elliot Lee is a player who has done well and been promoted from this division as well. He plays in the forward positions, whether he plays out wide or behind the striker. He’s got a good pedigree. He’s got experience. He’s with a Championship club. We can bring in a player from a Championship club who is young and hungry and dynamic and he’s got ability. He’s got goalscoring flair. He can see a pass and score a goal.
“We need competition for players to help drive performance. If we drive performance that helps to get results right. It’s a two-fold thing. We can’t just have 11 players. We’ve got some really talented young players coming through, we’ve got to make sure there’s a pathway for them. They get the training programme right, they get the coaching programme right, they get the games programme right.
“So, they’re getting their game time. But likewise, bringing a couple of talented loan players in can help the situation. And it won’t just be about 11 players. You can see it’s going to be a very demanding league campaign. We’re now going to be stepping up to go Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday. The intensity that the players have to work at now days you can’t just have 11 players. You can change things around and hopefully not lose anyone through injury.”
